In recent years, remote work has become increasingly popular, offering flexibility and freedom for individuals to work from the comfort of their own homes. Little did I know at the time in 2018 that although working from home was the absolute dream it was also going to be the most challenging thing I ever did!
The thing is for individuals with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), managing distractions can be an even greater challenge in a remote work environment than those who don’t.
And in this online space it’s so much harder! We’re more often than not alone and face a lot more of the constant allure of digital distractions. So much so it makes it kind of essential to develop effective strategies for maintaining focus and productivity – but that’s easier said than done as we know!
In this blog post, we will explore specific techniques tailored to ADHD entrepreneurs to help them navigate the unique challenges of managing distractions in a remote work setting.
Establish a Dedicated Workspace
Creating a designated workspace is crucial for minimising distractions. Set up a separate area in your home that is exclusively dedicated to work. You could also consider:
a. Decluttering: Keep your workspace tidy and organised, as visual clutter can be particularly distracting for individuals with ADHD. Leave your desk on a night in the same condition you would like to come back to.

b. Removing Temptations: Eliminate or minimise potential distractions from your immediate surroundings. This could include turning off or silencing non-work-related devices or apps.
c. Sensory Considerations: Pay attention to sensory triggers that might affect your concentration. Experiment with different lighting, background noise, or even fidget toys to find what helps you stay focused (I play with anything I can get my hands on in a Zoom call!)
Ideally, this space should also be free from household disturbances and have minimal foot traffic. By having a dedicated workspace, you create a clear boundary between work and personal life, making it easier to focus and stay productive.
Develop a Consistent Routine
Establishing a regular routine helps establish structure and discipline in your remote work environment.
Plan your day by setting specific working hours and adhering to them as much as possible. Even create the time when your lunch is.. We all know that’s easy to work through and before you know it you’re on the school run starving!
A consistent routine not only helps you stay on track but also signals to others in your household that you are unavailable during working hours, reducing potential interruptions.
Minimise Digital Distractions
The digital world is filled with distractions that can impede your productivity massively. To manage them effectively, try the following:
a. Notifications: Disable non-essential notifications on your devices or customise them to only receive critical updates related to work.
b. Social Media: Limit your access to social media platforms during working hours. Consider using website blockers or productivity apps to also help minimise temptations.
c. Email Management: Set specific times to check and respond to emails instead of constantly monitoring your inbox. Utilise filters and labels to prioritise and categorise messages for efficient handling.
Establish Clear Boundaries
Communicate with your family members or clients about your work schedule and establish clear boundaries.
Let them know when you are not to be disturbed unless it’s an emergency. Setting expectations and educating those around you about your need for uninterrupted work time will help minimise interruptions and distractions.
Practice Time Blocking
Time blocking is an effective technique for managing distractions and improving productivity. I personally use my Google calendar to both set my working hours and timeblock.
I allocate specific time blocks for different tasks throughout my day using the description within to note exactly what needs to be done. By setting aside focused time for important activities, you can minimise the urge to multitask or get distracted by unrelated tasks.
Use Productivity Tools
Take advantage of productivity tools and apps designed to help you stay focused and minimise distractions. Here are a few popular options:
Tools like Asana, Trello, Notion or even your Google Calendar can help you organise your tasks, set priorities, and track progress.
Practice Mindfulness and Self-Care
Managing distractions requires not just external strategies but also internal ones. Incorporate mindfulness practices into your routine, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises.
These techniques can help you stay centred, improve concentration, and reduce stress levels. Additionally, prioritise self-care by taking breaks, exercising, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, as these factors contribute to your overall well-being and focus.
Yes of course working remotely offers numerous benefits but it also presents challenges in managing distractions particularly those who have ADHD or it’s symptoms.
It is possible to effectively manage distractions and enhance your productivity in a remote work environment using these tips.
Remember, finding the right balance and being disciplined are key to maintaining focus and achieving your professional goals while working remotely.
