I had another one of those annoying ‘re-learning live’ epiphanies the other week. You know the ones as you go through your journey of ADHD exploration. I’d just reflected over the month of September and I realised why I have some blocks around goal setting.

Entrepreneurship is a challenging journey, one that demands determination, resilience, and the ability to set and achieve goals. Only, as we all know, for entrepreneurs with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), these challenges can be magnified.

The natural traits of impulsivity, distractibility, and hyperactivity that often accompany ADHD are big roadblocks (hence why I struggle with long term goals because I want to see results now!), but with the right strategies, they can be transformed into assets.

In this blog post, we will explore how entrepreneurs with ADHD can set realistic goals and increase their chances of success.

Self-awareness is the first step

The journey towards setting realistic goals begins with self-awareness. We must acknowledge our unique strengths and challenges. And understanding how our ADHD affects our work habits and decision-making processes is absolutely crucial. As I mentioned it was during the reflection on my last month and quarterly experiences that I was able to recognise my challenges with goal settings but ultimately setbacks, that allow me to identify patterns related to my ADHD symptoms.

Break goals into smaller, manageable tasks

Large, complex goals can be overwhelming for anyone, but they can be especially daunting for individuals with ADHD. This is what I support my own clients with through my Online Business Management. They have their bigger vision; their big goals but, like me, need to make them more achievable by breaking them up into smaller, bite-sized tasks. This not only makes the overall goal more manageable but also provides a sense of accomplishment as you complete each task.

Prioritise ruthlessly

Prioritisation is a skill that can make or break an entrepreneur with ADHD. It’s something that we struggle with massively! Because ultimately to run a business we need to set realistic goals, identify what truly matters and focus your energy on those tasks. Sounds easy doesn’t it… not! But tools like the Eisenhower Matrix, which categorises tasks into four quadrants (urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, neither urgent nor important), can help you visualise prioritisation effectively.

Embrace technology and tools

Technology can be a lifesaver for entrepreneurs with ADHD. It’s something I’m very passionate about – I’ll even tell my clients that it’s worthwhile them investing in a piece of kit rather than paying me to do some elements of a job because it can also be financially beneficial too.

Utilising digital tools and apps for task management, time tracking, and organisation. Applications like Trello, Asana or Toggl can help you stay on top of your to-do lists and deadlines. Additionally, consider using reminder apps or setting alarms to keep you on track throughout the day.

Set realistic timelines

ADHD entrepreneurs often underestimate the time needed to complete tasks due to our impulsivity. To set realistic goals, allocate more time than you think you’ll need for each task. This buffer can help you manage unexpected distractions or delays without feeling overwhelmed.  Remember too about white space in your diary – not too much, we don’t want you to rely on it too much but it can help with the overwhelming feeling of when things run over.

Find an accountability partner

Having someone to hold you accountable can significantly improve your goal-setting and achievement. I’ve found my spaces personally – both are memberships. Something that I’ve always found myself shying away from because I tended to help others before myself in group situations – but these are my spaces where I feel like I can be myself and they ‘get me’. That being said, you don’t actually need to invest in anything for an accountability partner..  It could be a business partner, a mentor, or a friend, sharing your goals with someone you trust can help you stay focused and motivated.

Create a structured routine

Consistency and routine can be your allies in managing ADHD symptoms. Establish a daily schedule that includes dedicated time for work, breaks, exercise, and relaxation. Sticking to this routine as closely as possible (on the basis it’s been created for you and it’s not a ‘take my schedule, this is how you can earn x-amount of £’s in just three days’ type thing as it has to suit you and the way your brain works!)

It can really help with the structure and predictability that counteracts ADHD’s impulsivity and distractibility.

Practice self-compassion

Entrepreneurship can be a rollercoaster, and setbacks are a part of the journey. I’ve mentioned at the start of this post that I’m still re-learning and tuning in to what makes me me and why at 37 years old!

Instead of being overly critical of yourself, practice self-compassion. Learn from your mistakes and experiences, adjust your goals when necessary, and celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem.

Seek professional support

Finally, don’t hesitate to seek professional support if you’re struggling with ADHD as an entrepreneur. Whether that be a healthcare provider, coach or therapist can offer guidance, medication management, and coping strategies tailored to your unique needs. If you’re also looking for help with the actually managing of your business and projects then you know where I am (drop me an email here kirsty@kirstyholden.com) or if you’re looking for funding to help you do the things you’re unable to do check out Access To Work.

Entrepreneurship with ADHD is undoubtedly challenging, but it’s also filled with opportunities for creativity and innovation.

By embracing our strengths, managing challenges, and following these strategies for setting realistic goals, we can thrive as an entrepreneur with ADHD.

Remember that success may not come overnight, and that’s ok! But with determination and the right support, you can achieve your entrepreneurial dreams.
