The start of the day sets the tone for the hours that follow. I’m sure you’ve heard that saying before but it’s true right? And for entrepreneurs with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), establishing a structured morning routine can really help to provide us a really solid foundation for increased focus, productivity, and overall well-being throughout the day. In this blog post, I wanted to explore actionable steps to help ADHD entrepreneurs create a powerful morning routine that is designed to propel us all toward success.

The Power of Morning Routines

Morning routines offer a range of benefits for individuals with ADHD. By establishing a set of structured activities to kickstart the day based on your own energy levels, you create a sense of predictability, reduce decision fatigue, and set a positive tone that can carry through your work hours.

Crafting Your Morning Routine

Start with Self-Care

Begin your morning routine by focusing on self-care activities that help you centre yourself and set a positive tone for the day. Think about things you enjoy, or incorporate practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or light stretching to calm your mind and prepare for the day ahead.

Hydration and Nutrition

Prioritise a nutritious breakfast and hydration. I’ve been having some coaching with an ADHD specialist and I never realised how much I personally self medicate using food. Fueling our body with balanced nutrients and water supports cognitive function and mental clarity, crucial for managing ADHD-related challenges.

Exercise and Physical Activity

Engaging in physical activity, even if it’s a short walk or a few minutes of stretching, can boost dopamine levels, improve focus, and increase energy levels. If you take the car to school can you walk or even bike? If you don’t fancy a big gym workout take the dog out for an extra walk! Incorporating movement into your morning routine can really help to jumpstart your day.

Mindful Planning

Set aside time for planning and organisation. I work at the very least a week in advance because I can’t turn up on Monday morning at my desk not knowing where I need to be. Review your schedule in advance and prioritise tasks for the day before it starts ideally. This proactive approach helps prevent overwhelm and ensures a clear direction for the day’s activities.

Technology Check-in

Allocate a specific time to check emails and messages. I have regular points throughout the day to check my emails and while it’s a ‘boring task’ to me that I try to avoid if I don’t do what I need to do at those times; I know if I don’t I’ll probably dive into work-related communications right after waking up and get super hyper focused replying to people and having conversations. This is all well and good but by then I’ll have disrupted my focus and diversion from my morning routine and that will have completely gone to pot!

Hyperfocus Window

Utilise your natural hyperfocus window, which is often stronger in the morning, to tackle critical tasks. It’s why I get engrossed in checking my emails and social media! Allocate a block of time to work on your most challenging projects or things you put off during this period.

Breaks and Transitions

Incorporate short breaks between tasks or activities to recharge and prevent burnout. I’ve spoken regularly on these blogs about the importance of structure and white space. (Check out this blog on creating an effective daily routine). But these breaks can really help you transition from one task to another and maintain consistent energy levels.

Review and Reflection

At the end of your morning routine, take a moment to review what you’ve accomplished. Celebrate your small wins and acknowledge your progress. This positive reinforcement can boost your motivation and mindset for the rest of the day.

Because a well-structured morning routine can be a game-changer for ADHD entrepreneurs, setting the tone for a productive and fulfilling day.

By incorporating self-care, organisation, exercise, and focused work time, you can harness the potential of your ADHD traits while minimising their challenges.

Remember, your morning routine isn’t just a checklist nor can someone tell you what to do, we can only make suggestions for you to try – because it’s a tool that empowers you to seize the day and accomplish your entrepreneurial goals with intention and energy.
